1.Gem exploration

Since ancient times, Sri Lanka has been legendary for its gemstones. Nearly all of Sri Lanka's gemstones are extracted from mines surrounding moist river beds and valley floors. The majority of these mines consist of stratified ore bearing layers. Some mines may be only one meter deep, some hundreds of meters deep. 

1.宝石探测 
从古代开始开始，宝石就是斯里兰卡永恒的传说。斯里兰卡宝石几乎全部产自湿润的河床和谷底地带，多数矿层呈现为层状分布。有的矿床埋藏只有1米深，有的可以深达几十米或数百米。

2. Mine extraction
With the assistance of simple methods and machinery, a small group of miners--or even a single miner--may be sufficient manpower to remove the top layers of sand. 

Thus, the quest for gemstones begins.

2.矿山开采 
开采时，会先使用大型挖掘机械将矿层上部的泥沙搬运，一般由单个矿工或一小群矿工用简单的方法和设备即可开采。

寻宝之旅，从此开始。

3. Ore sifting
The final stage of gemstone extraction is mine washing and sifting. The dug up material is put in a sieve or wicker basket and is washed with high-pressure water, separating mineral particles from clay. The separated mud is pumped away and the gem-containing ore is loaded into the gravity separation equipment and left at the bottom of the equipment by manual or mechanical vibration, so that the ore containing gemstones can be initially screened.

3.筛选 
宝石开采的最后步骤即是洗矿和筛选，将挖出来的小石块放置在筛子或簸箩上，使用高压水龙进行淋洗，使得矿砂和泥土分离，分离后的泥浆被泵排走，含宝石的矿砂被装入重力选矿设备中，通过人工或机械振动的方式遗留在设备底部，这样就可以初步筛选出含有宝石的矿砂。

4. Rough stone production
Next, experienced workers carefully select rough stones of differing shapes and sizes from the ore left on the sieve. Often, one or two rough gemstones may be selected from the ore. Of course, it is not uncommon to find no stones at all. So the next round of digging, panning and selection is done over and over again.

4.产生原石 
接着，经验丰富的工人会对筛面上遗留下来的矿石进行谨慎挑选，选出一颗颗大小不一且形状不规则的原石。通常，在众多矿石中只能挑拣出一两颗原宝石。当然，一颗宝石也未发现也是十分常见的事情。所以，就需要周而复始不断地进行下一轮的挖掘、淘洗及筛选工作。

从矿上开采出的原石进行筛选、分类之后，从中精心挑选出高品质的宝石交由设计师加工。设计师根据原石的大小、质量、形状，设计出琢磨的式样，琢磨的过程则需要经过出胚、上杆、研磨、抛光等十多道复杂工序。这也是宝石诞生过程中最艰辛、最关键的一步。化蝶从现在开始！
